Asbestos surveys, testing and safe removal
Most NYC buildings constructed before 1980 contain some asbestos. Before you renovate, demolish or pull a DOB permit, you need to know where it is and remove it the right way.

Where asbestos hides in NYC buildings
9"×9" vinyl floor tiles and their black mastic, pipe lagging in basements, boiler insulation, textured "popcorn" ceilings, plaster and skim coat, window glazing and caulk, and older roofing. It is usually harmless while intact and becomes dangerous when it is cut, sanded or demolished.

Common asbestos questions
Do I need an asbestos survey before renovating in NYC?
In most cases, yes. Before the NYC Department of Buildings issues many alteration or demolition permits, the work area must be assessed for asbestos by a NYC DEP-certified asbestos investigator. If asbestos will be disturbed, it has to be abated before the work starts.
How can I tell if a material contains asbestos?
You cannot tell by looking at it. A sample has to be collected and analyzed by an accredited laboratory. We collect the samples and give you the lab results and a plain-language summary.
Is asbestos dangerous if I leave it alone?
Asbestos that is intact and undisturbed is generally low risk. It becomes a hazard when it is damaged, cut, sanded or demolished and fibers are released into the air. That is why testing before renovation matters.
How long does asbestos removal take?
Small residential jobs, such as floor tile or pipe insulation in one area, often take a few days including setup, removal and air clearance testing. Larger projects are scheduled after the survey and agency filings.
